At Advance Tapes, we pride ourselves on Diversity and Inclusion. June is the month to celebrate Diversity and Inclusion and we wanted to share with you some statistics and examples of how we foster this within our organisation.

We are working towards our Management and Senior Leadership teams having an equal male/female split. Currently we are working at 45% Female members, 55% Male member.

According to LinkedIn, within the UK Women make up 30% of management roles. This shows that we are trending higher than the UK average.

We are really proud to have a focus in Diversity month with Agnieszka Milewczyk, who is our female Senior Project Scientist. Within the UK females only make up 24% of the STEM sector (Source: Wise).

What Agnieszka likes to be called?

I like to be called Agnes, as this is internationally recognised abbreviation of my name. People within our company are extremely creative and have fun producing new abbreviations, so I’ve been called many names e.g.: Agnies, Agonies or Aggers

Why did you come to UK?

12 years ago, shortly after my graduation from Chemical faculty at University of Technology in Gdansk I took summer trip to UK and extended my journey since then.

Why did you decide to follow a path in science?

Chemistry and biology and their interlink were extremely interesting for me, from my junior years. Love for nature and fascination with its beauty were passed on to me by my parents. Later excitement for chemistry was spread by brilliant teachers within my high school. All those factors added together with my determination resulted in completing a degree in Biotechnology.

What do you enjoy most about your job?

I love challenges! Tell me that something is impossible, and I will do my best to prove you wrong. I like to learn new things and discovering interdependencies, as this is an initial improvement tool. A challenge and change those are thrilling and motivating things, that are required within every working environment, and I’m honoured to take my part in starting those changes within our company.

What do you do outside of your day job?

I love to explore nature, especially during long walkies with Muffy (my Yorkshire terrier predator). I’m addicted to watching tennis (only WTA, sorry boys!). I participate in various vegan events and initiatives that lead to reducing environmental impact that society has on the planet, as There Is No Planet B!

We are delighted to announce the promotion of Cecile to Commerciale Sédentaire/Internal Sales Advisor, effective immediately, after 5 years with Advance Tapes France.

Cecile initially joined us on a contract basis but soon became a permanent member of the team as a Customer Service Coordinator. After returning from a short maternity leave following the birth of her son Rafael, Cecile demonstrated her determination to further her career in sales.

Cecile has exhibited a natural talent for building relationships with our customers and has successfully nurtured these relationships, resulting in increased orders.

As we assess the sales structure at Advance Tapes, we are thrilled that Cecile, as part of her development, has accepted the role of Commerciale Sédentaire/Internal Sales Advisor.

In this new position, Cecile will be responsible for managing specific customers, including ESL, LA Bs, and Sebemex customers. She will also have a Sales Budget to oversee and will become an integral part of the sales organisation.

We are confident that Cécile will excel in her new role, and we ask you to join us in wishing her every success.

2020 was a very challenging year, but every challenge brings an opportunity for further development and growth. Today we would like to reflect on our highlights of 2020 such as East Midlands Make UK Awards which honoured both, our product and people. Read our blog post and find out more about our success.

In October we attended the virtual Make UK Awards Ceremony as finalists in two categories: Manufacturing Matters and Business Apprentice.

The ‘Manufacturing Matters’ is a new category that recognises manufacturers who have done exceptional work in the sector by showing dedication and resilience to improve lives and society. We were incredibly pleased to find out that our Social Distancing Kits were nominated for such a prestigious award.

The idea for Social Distancing Kits was born when Mike Ayres, CEO of Advance Tapes, and Darren Joint, Managing Director of Viking Signs met during a roundtable discussion organised by Make UK. Having implemented safety measures on their production sites they felt that they can use their knowledge to help others.

Darren Joint, Viking Signs: ‘Using our experience of manufacturing safety signs and operating industrial and warehouse premises we were able to conduct a risk assessment relating to COVID-19 and the new risks this presents. We identified 4 major areas where safety signage could help reduce the risk of virus transmission such as access / egress, pedestrian traffic, sanitiser / hand wash use, and multi-use / high touch surfaces. For each of these areas, signs have been included in the kit, either from our existing product range, or brand-new specific signage developed to meet the needs of warehouse and industrial customers’

Mike Ayres, Advance Tapes: ‘Many businesses were struggling to find the right tools to make social distancing an integral part of the new workplace. With our ready to use kits that include tapes and signage we wanted to provide an easy and quick solution and help manufacturers and retailers protect their staff, visitors and customers.’

Being a finalist in this category was already a great success but finding out that our product was a runner up exceeded our expectations.

There was however more great news to come.

The Business Apprentice Raising Star category recognises those who have done the most to seize the training and development opportunities presented to them so far and we were incredibly proud of our HR Apprentice George Palmer who was nominated as a finalist.

George joined Advance in the summer of 2018 and since then his contribution to the business has been invaluable. During his time at Advance George has accomplished the Level 3 HR Support Standard Programme accredited by CIPD and he is currently working towards the Level 5 qualification, which he hopes to complete by the end of 2021.

George recently won Advance’s Employee of the Year award for his professionalism, resilience and adaptability and we were over the moon to find out that George was also the winner in Rising Star category.

George Greenhill, Advance Tapes: ‘This year has certainly been challenging, however it has also been a fantastic learning opportunity for me and it has given me some invaluable experience as an Apprentice. I have been very fortunate that throughout my time with Advance I have been thoroughly supported by the whole team and that was why I was so proud to win the Midlands and East Business Rising Star Apprentice of the year award.’
The national finals are on January 28th 2021 and we are keeping our fingers crossed for George!

Meet Dawn Burton, one of our Converting Operators who is a key member of our team still on site, helping us to get our products to our customers who most need it. Read on to find out more about Dawn’s career, interests, and the transition to working under social distancing guidance.

How long have you worked at Advance?

I have been working at Advance for a year. Prior to working here I worked in the Care sector for seven years during which I gained a Diploma in End of Life and Dementia. Before that I worked in security in the retail sector as a Loss Prevention Officer for twenty-three years.

When I applied for this role I was working for Sainsbury’s and Nottingham Industrial Cleaners as a cleaner of the Advance converting site. It was during my time cleaning that I decided to enquire about a job as whenever I went on to the shop floor I loved the atmosphere and felt very at home.

I asked Will Holland (Converting Production Manager) if there were any vacancies however there weren’t at the time but I filled out an application form and it was taken from there. So here I am nearly a year later and I’m still very happy in my role.

How have your responsibilities changed since you started?

Since joining I’ve gradually been building up my skills on different assets. I’ve been signed off on the training for SW1 and I’ve helped out on other machines such as SW2, Axon and SW4. I’m keen to keep up my training and learn as much as I can so I can be a multi-skilled Operator. I like to be able to move around the machines as this means I get to work with and get to know more of the team.

How do you feel about the social distancing guidance on site?

I think its working really well and its impressive how quickly the whole team has adapted to working in these new conditions.

We have lots of measures in place to keep us as safe as possible such as 2m floor marking around all workstations to protect operators, staggered shift changes and restricted numbers in the toilets and canteen amongst others. We have face masks, gloves and plenty of hand sanitiser on site which helps.

If you could switch to any career what would it be?

I did love working in security as I’m very good at reading people and don’t miss a trick. I only lost one case during my twenty three years there, so perhaps I would go back to that. Or maybe I could try sales as I’m a people person and enjoy chatting!

Do you have a secret talent or hobby that people may not know about?

I enjoy camping and caravanning and I love animals. I have a Jack Russel, well I’ve been brought up with Jack Russel’s all my life. My current one is called Milo, well Milo Moo Moo I called him. I love him! The only animal I don’t like is spiders.

Who is the funniest person you work with and why?

Me! Actually, I would have to say Hamid Dahim (Converting Operator) he has a great sense of humour. For example, last year we were talking about Haggis and he thought it was a three legged animal that lived in Scotland and rolls downhills! He’s so funny, he often has me in stitches.

If you had £10 million what would you do with it?

I would give some to the RSPCA and then I’d share the rest between my family. I wouldn’t like to win millions as it wouldn’t make me happy. I think money changes people and I don’t want to change, I’m happy as I am.

What do you think you are best known for at work?

Chatting, I love chatting and joking with everyone in the team to keep morale going. Its particularly important at this time to keep everyone’s spirits up so that is what I try to do and something I think I’m good at! Everyone’s emotions can be so up and down during this time so I see it as part of my job to keep the team motivated and positive. I’m always happy, that’s me. I also get called Dizzy Dawn but we are all laughing and joking, I know it’s not serious.

If you could have a superpower what would it be and why?

I think I would be invisible so I could be a fly on the wall.

What’s your idea of success in your job?

For me it’s taking pride in what I do. I always think what would the customer think? I always like to produce something that I would be happy to receive.

What do you like most about your job?

Interacting with the team. I’m always happy at work and I always try to make others happy if they are feeling down.

Where is your favourite place in the world?

Home with my family. Especially, during these difficult times you realise just how important your home and family are.

If you could swap places with anyone for the day who would it be?

The first person that comes to mind is Paul O’Grady as he does lots of work with dogs which I love. I’d love to work for a dogs home like Battersea Dogs and Cats home, that would be great.

As Easter is fast approaching, we have put together some fun ideas how you can use our tape to create some fun Easter decorations.

  1. Tape the eggs.

In many countries painting and decorating Easter eggs are part of Easter traditions. But have you ever thought about decorating eggs with a tape? To be on a safe side boil the eggs first and let them cool down. You can either tape the egg around or cut the tape in small pieces and paste them on the egg. These eggs have been decorated with our AT7 PVC Electrical Insulation Tapes and AT502  30 Micron Aluminium Foil Tape.  A nice alternative to traditional Easter eggs.

decorated eggs with adhesive tapes

We used tapes to decorate the Easter eggs.

  1. Paper decorations

For this decoration you can use a cardboard or a standard paper. Draw an egg, cut the shape out and use any tape to colour the egg. You can use an aluminium foil tape to get an extra shine. You can stick the decoration to the window or add a thread and hang it in a garden or on your front door. This colourful egg was decorated with stripes of AT7 PVC Electrical Insulation Tapes. The tapes are conformable and stick well to paper. They are also water and UV-resistant, so you can use the decoration outside.

AT7 is perfect for decorations on paper or cardboard.

  1. Flowers with tape

It is spring and we all enjoy the beautiful flowers which are blooming in the gardens and parks. But do you know that you can make some flowers with adhesive tapes? You need a straw and stripes of tapes.  Cut a stripe of a tape and wrap the straw around it, so that you can have a stalk. Fold the remaining stripes of the tape and wrap them around the stalk trying to mimic the buds. A bit of patience and the flower is ready. For this decoration we used our AT6190 Extreme Tack Duct Tape  and AT175 High Quality Gloss Waterproof  Cloth Tape.  They both have high tack, so that the flowers won’t unfold.

We hope you are going to have lots of fun with our ideas! Happy Easter and stay safe! Advance Tapes

Meet Jeff Taylor, one of our most experienced Converting Cell Leaders. He took some time to reflect on his 30 years at Advance and to tell us what he’s looking forward to in his upcoming retirement. Read on to find out more.

How long have you worked at Advance Tapes?
Well, on the 19th March 2020 was my 30th anniversary. I can remember my first day just about, I was working down at Pinfold Road. I’ve always worked in converting but originally, I was working in cutting as a Service Man. I was involved in servicing the cutting machines to keep a steady flow of rolls, picking out logs, sorting out rubbish and learning a bit of operating here and there and that’s how it started. Before I worked at Advance, I worked in the shoe trade which I had done for a few years. The speed that I built up working in the shoe trade really helped me at Advance as it taught me how to work at a good rate.

How have your responsibilities changes since you first started?
So, I originally started as a Service Man and then I got promoted to be an Operator on the cutting machine. I first learned to operate on a machine that was a single shaft machine with mostly manual operation. Then I moved onto a double shaft machine that was used to cut the small core PVC logs. A while later I was asked to be a Cell Leader and have been ever since. I started as a serviceman on the Pinfold site, just after we got the Range 1 commissioned in 1990.

What has been your most memorable moment of your 30 years at Advance?
Oh yes, the trip to Taiwan. I was part of a team that went out to see the C2 cutting machine that would enable us to cut on a 3-inch shaft. We had a weekend in Hong Kong and then travelled on to Taipei in Taiwan to see the company that made the machine and then also went to a few trade fairs which was very interesting. It was a great experienced we had some interesting food including Catfish.

I’ve been lucky enough to see two sites develop in my time at Advance. When I first joined the company had just moved to the Pinfold Road site and then in 2011, I helped with the transfer over to the new Westmoreland Site (Head Office and Converting).

Is there a specific project that you are working on at the moment that you think people might be interested to hear about?
We are rolling out 5S practices across the shop floor at both sites and as Cell Leaders we are key to implementing this. 5S is a Lean Manufacturing tool that improves workplace efficiency and helps towards eliminating waste. My team have really embraced the 5S system and we are starting to see some real benefits. We are also in the process of developing Personal Development Plans for each member of our team to help them identify specific areas for improvement and push them to be their best.

If you could switch to any career what would it be?
I used to like playing football and would have liked to have been a footballer, but it didn’t work out. I played for a local league in Leicester on Saturday afternoons and Sunday mornings but unfortunately, I never got spotted.

My other favourite hobby was darts. I used to play to a high standard and the team that I played for won most of the divisions we were in and the knockout cups.

I like watching most sports including football, darts and rugby. I used to be a Leicester City fan back when they were at the old ground and used to go to matches with my brother-in-law at the time. I haven’t been to the new stadium. I also used to love watching Manchester United back when they were in their hay day.

Who is the funniest person you work with?
I don’t know about funniest, but I really like working with all my team particularly the other Converting Cell Leaders such as Jason Tookey, Neil Wheatley and Production Manager, Will Holland.

What hobby do you have that other people might not know about?
My other pastime used to be fishing. Anybody that’s been here long enough will tell you that I used to win all the fishing tournaments. We used to have an Advance Tapes fishing league. We decided that there was enough of us that enjoyed fishing that we would create a league and day out from it. We used to have a weigh in at the end of the day and whoever had caught the most in weight would win. There was about 8 or 9 of us that used to go to the Ashby Folville fishing lakes, a few still work here including Byron Barrow (Range 2 Operator), Jason Tookey and Neil Wheatley (Converting Cell Leaders). It lasted about 5 or 6 years and it was great fun.

If you had £10 million what would you do with it?
Oh, I’d enjoy it! I’d do all the things I wanted to do and haven’t done yet. I’d do a bit of travel, look after the family and make sure the children were alright. I’ve always wanted to go to Mauritius and the Maldives. I’d have to talk the wife into going though. I say to her where do you want to go on holiday this year and she always says Cornwall.

I would like to visit a new place, explore the culture and see what it’s like to be a local. We like a mixture between experiencing the culture, local food and having a bit of night life, that would be my idea of a good trip. I’m not bothered about just lying on the beach, I like having to explore.

What do you think you are most known for at work?
I like getting the job done. My team also have names for me including grumpy but its all in good humour.

If you could have a superpower what would it be and why?
I’d have telepathy. It would be great to communicate with my team without having to go over to the machines.

What is your idea of success in your job?
Being satisfied that I’ve done my job for the day to the best of my ability. It’s a team effort to get the work done and I’ve got to help my team perform to their best.

What do you like most about your job?
I like working as a team with the other Cell Leaders and Managers on the converting shopfloor.

If you could swap places with anyone in the world for the day who would it be?
I’d love to be George Best for the day – the wizard. He was very, very good. I would like to have had some of his skill and then maybe I would have made it as a footballer.

Where is your favourite place in the world?
My favourite place in the world is this little beach in Cornwall. The first time we saw it we were at the Minack theatre and I looked down from the cliffs and could see a cove of clear blue sea and white sand. We didn’t actually go down to the beach until a few years later but when we did it was beautiful. When I was growing up, we went to the beach on the east coast to Great Yarmouth and the sea there is often a lot murkier. But the sea is much clearer in Cornwall and my youngest daughter loves to go snorkelling there.

What are your plans for your future retirement?
I don’t know I haven’t spoken to the wife properly about it yet. I’m sure she’s got lots of little jobs lined up for me. I don’t really like gardening but I’m sure that will come into it somewhere. I don’t mind though as long as we are together, we will be alright. I’m looking forward to spending more time together.

Peter Brooks works within our IT team to ensure that our IT infrastructure is always running efficiently. His technical knowledge and commitment to his role are an asset to Advance.

How long have you worked at Advance Tapes?

I’ve been working at Advance Tapes for just over one year now. Before Advance I was a Systems Engineer for a Mac Company which primarily dealt with photo and publishing companies.

What are your main responsibilities? What projects are you working on that people may be interested to know about?

My main responsibilities are taking care of the IT infrastructure for the two sites alongside Hema Rayarel (IT Helpdesk Systems Support). This includes desktop user support and looking after the network. We are currently working on a number of new and exciting projects including the roll out of the Office 365 application to all computers in the business. This will standardise all the copies of office between factory and office computers and will assist in the transfer of company emails to the cloud. We are also installing a new Avaya phone system which has a range of new features which were not available with the old model. As well as this we are implementing a Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS) line to all of our sites which is essentially upgrading all the business broadband lines.

If you could switch to another career what would it be and why?

When I was younger, I always wanted to join the Airforce as I’ve always liked the idea of being able to fly planes. However, my poor eyesight means that I wouldn’t be able to do that unfortunately. I have a friend who owns a flight simulator school though and I go there every now and again.

Who is the funniest person you work with and why?

It has to be Kerrie Robinson (Finance Manager). She is great fun to work with and never fails to crack us up.

What interests do you have outside of work that people might not know about?

I enjoy playing golf outside of work and play football every now and again. I would really like to do a Tough Mudder challenge again. I did one a few years ago in Kettering and really enjoyed it. It would be great to get a group of people together to do another as although it’s physically demanding it’s a great team bonding exercise. There’s a great spirit to the event as everyone helps each other.

If you had £10 million what would you do with it?

I would pay off my mortgage and spend the rest on my family perhaps on a few nice holidays. To be honest if I was to win money on the lottery, I would still come into work the next day as otherwise I would be bored. I’d keep my job and invest the money in a few different ways.

If you had a superpower what would it be and why?

Umm, that’s a tricky one. I think I would have invisibility but at the end of the day each person is their own superpower as we are all unique.

What is your idea of success?

Success for me is managing to complete a project without any hitches. I know that this is difficult to accomplish as there are always obstacles that you encounter but if I am able to overcome these and ensure things run smoothly, I am satisfied.

What do you like most about your job?

The staff and the interaction between employees. It’s nice that you aren’t segregated to just your department or team, you get to communicate and collaborate with everyone.

Who would you like to switch places with for the day if you could?

Daniel Craig and then I could do a James Bond film. It’s hard to pick my favourite James Bond film but I’d have to say Spectre or Casino Royale.

What is the last book you read?

The last book I read is the Office 365 exam book to assist me with my work. I don’t really read much other than technical books.

Where is your favourite place in the world?

At home, surrounded by family.
