We are excited to announce we have officially launched “Vision 2022”, our next strategic plan to carry us forward during the next four years. It is our ambition to build on the progress that was made by strengthening existing strategies and to identify new opportunities.

A vision built together

The journey towards the launch of the strategic plan began in September, 2017 with the organisation of several workshop between Mike Ayres, CEO of Advance Tapes, and every employee in order for them to give feedback and ideas to help create a common vision for the future.

The workshops session were both positive and constructive and it has been decided that the Direction will repeat this consultation on an annual basis. A summary of the feedback received was made available once all workshops were completed and the improvement started in November 2017.

Official Launch

The Vision 2022 was presented to 150 UK employees in entertaining style by the senior leadership team Mike Ayres, Sharon Boyle, Kym Ellington and Gil Woodward. The first event took place on the 9th of March 2018 at the headquarters in Leicester, England and marked the start of the Vision 2022 plan by answering the question “Why should I work for Advance Tapes?

After the presentation, food and drinks were served providing the opportunity for questions and conversations. It was also the opportunity for them to sign the Commitment Board and become part of the next chapter in our history.

A great few days for Advance were rounded off when we shared Vision 2022 with our fantastic French team. The Advance Tapes leadership team did a brilliant job delivering the presentation in French. The response has been fantastic and we are excited to begin building our Vision 2022.,

We’re good to grow!

Advance Tapes specialise in the manufacturing of adhesive tapes such as cloth coated tape, aluminum foil and many more for many different industry applications and uses.

Marcin Dudek is a Polish born artist who recently presented his third solo exhibition, Steps and Marches, which took place at Edel Assanti (London) and Harlan Levey Projects (Brussels) from 22nd September through 4th November 2017.

We had the  great pleasure and honour to welcome Marcin to our premises in Leicester for a factory guided tour which gave us the perfect opportunity to  know more about Marcin’s incredible journey to become a successful artist of international fame, his artistic process and what makes him “tick” creatively.

Tell us a bit about yourself.

Art was a way to escape from my past as a of Cracovia Hooligan firm, although it provides an autobiographical springboard for the Steps and Marches exhibition. I left Poland at the age of 21, in order to study at the Mozarteum Art School in Salzburg (from which I graduated in 2005) as well as Central Saint Martins in London (from which I graduated in 2007). Since then, I had the pleasure to exhibit internationally at venues such as Moscow Museum of Modern Art. I currently live and work between Brussels and Krakow.

What is the thing you enjoy most about working with tape?

The idea to use tape emerged from my work experience as a technician in art galleries across London, where I was working to support my study. Tapes offer flexibility which make them extremely easy to apply to smooth or uneven surfaces. They also can be used to create three-dimensional effect artworks and illusionistic trompe l’oeil perspectives. Tapes are great to explore concepts of line and space from organic forms to man-made structures.

But the best part about tapes is the endless possibilities of combination of shades, width, amount, size and number of layers which create something unique. It’s the perfect medium to rapidly explore new ideas.

What made you choose AT201 Matt Cloth Advance Gaffa® Tape?

When I started my collages I was collecting amalgams of adhesive film, parcel tape, cloth tape, gaffer tape and grip tape from flea markets, DIY centres or pound shops. This was until I found by chance your products in a hire supplies shop in London. The quality of the tape immediately gave me a different perspective of what can be achieved. The texture and the thickness of AT201 enable me to cut it into multiple pieces in a 45C angle which is required for my collage. I particularly love its super matt finish.

I have now been using Advance Tapes products for the past 6 years.

Can you tell us about the process of making your work?

Planning is important when it comes to creating complex collages as every minuscule layer of tape is meticulously cut into different shapes and sizes by hand. For the large scale work, I would use a projector to give the first guideline on where to place the first line of tape, I also use projector to ‘draw’ with tape the photographs and include it in the collage. Then it is the fruit of a intuitive game of density, composition and dynamism. Patience is also a key element as sometimes it can take months to finish a collage.

One chapter of your Steps and Marches exhibition was recently presented in Edel Assanti Art Gallery in London and it was absolutely stunning. We had the feeling that the collage Confidence Frame as well as Too Cloose for Comfort was inviting the visitor to step in into this universe.

Exactly! Both of them demand the viewer’s close attention and participation. The whole exhibition pulled visitors into a stadium, for example Recovery and Control forced visitors to enter the exhibition one at a time and Confidence Frame to examine an event from different perspectives.

The exhibition explore the role of the crowd psychology in a football stadium. Confidence Frame depict a sequence of moments in which fans confront riot police on the pitch. How would you describe the crowd behaviour in emergency evacuations?

Despite the mass effect, hooligans operate in well-organised groups and are led by strong personalities who – in time of crisis – play an important role in keeping everyone united. In general, we could say that the confrontation defines the moment the crowd exists.

Thanks Marcin!

We are highly delighted to announce that Advance Tapes is sponsoring Steps and Marches, the 2017 exhibition by artist Marcin Dudek, which will be on view from 22 September through 4 November 2017 at Edel Assanti art gallery in central London.

Marcin Dudek has used adhesives from the start of his professional artistic career. The idea to use tape in his practice emerged from his role as a technician in art galleries across London, building exhibitions and professionally packing artworks.

Marcin Dudek discovered collages as an advantageous medium for exploring and mapping space. Using amalgams of adhesive tape, the collages explore concepts of line and space from organic forms to man-made structures. Many of them seem to be three-dimensional, as they map out space above and below ground. At Advance Tapes, we are committed to supporting artists, schools, charities and local community organisations every year, helping them to successfully deliver their projects.

We have been particularly impressed by Marcin Dudek’s exceptionally artistic use of our cloth and PVC tapes, therefore, it seemed natural for Advance to become a supporter and to contribute to his excellent work.

Steps and Marches

Marcin Dudek explores the politics of identity and space, conflating hooliganism, memory and the architecture of social experience. An autobiographical dialogue with his own past underpins this discussion, drawing on his own experiences of violent football subculture and post-Soviet societal climate as a point of departure.

Dudek’s youth as a fanatical football supporter provides an autobiographical springboard for this exhibition, which explores the stadium as a metaphor for social reality, spectacle, and the kind of polarization techniques prevalent in all forms of socio-political rivalry. The exhibition takes place at Edel Assanti (London) and Harlan Levey Projects (Brussels) expanding on two prior exhibitions in each gallery. Works in the exhibition demonstrate the relationship between one and many in a cross-chunnel dialogue.

The London exhibition dives into the march of mass movements, whilst the Brussels chapter zooms in on the steps of individuals who shaped those spectacles. Centrefold in London is a monumental installation comprised of freestanding geometric MDF blocks, each referencing specific historic crowd disasters through statistical representation. Monitors embedded within this modular landscape play looped black and white footage, alternating between exercises in coordinated demonstrations and violent explosions of crowd violence.

Inanimate sculptural objects construed from materials that evidence these same disasters or authoritative bodies’ attempts to curtail them. The exhibition will open at Harlan Levey Projects on 7th September during Brussels Gallery Weekend, and on 21st September at Edel Assanti, remaining open throughout Frieze in London.

Tapes often look very similar to each other but they all have unique properties that make them ideally suited to many specific types of applications. To help the end-user make an informed decision about what tape to use, simply ask these essential questions.

Determine the application

What is the application?

Determine the surface

On which surface will the tape be applied to?

Determine the tape performance

Will the tape be applied to a rough or smooth, irregular or curved surface?

Will the tape be used indoors or outdoors? Or both?

Will the tape need to perform at extreme hot or cold temperatures?

Will the tape be in contact with humidity, water, UV light or chemical substances?

Does the tape need to support any weight?

How long does the tape need to adhere to the surface? (permanent, removable or reposition-able adhesive)

Does the tape need to peel clean?

Determine additional needs

Are there specifications you need or are required for the job such as Military or UL approval?

BBC Breakfast chose Advance Tapes for live broadcasts throughout the morning surrounding the speculation of the anticipated Bank of England cut in interest rates. The prediction was a reduction from 0.5% to 0.25% which would be a record low and the first cut since 2009. Ahead of this decision, the national broadcast aimed to find out how businesses might react and how this decision would affect individuals as well.

Advance Tapes was highlighted as an ideal representative UK Tape Manufacturer and exporter, and was chosen to host the show. The breakfast show was broadcast live from Advance Tapes’ Converting site located in Leicester, on Thursday 4th August 2016, with guests including Paul Forrest from Midlands Economic Forum, David Hollingworth from London and Country Mortgages, and Jasmine Birtles,  a personal finance expert. Ben Thompson from the BBC interviewed Mike Ayres, Chairman of Advance Tapes on the impact of interest rates for a UK Manufacturer.

What would the interest rates cut mean for Advance Tapes?

“For Advance Tapes, as an UK exporter, it is great news! It makes our product more competitive abroad because this is keeping the pound low and also making the cost of asset finance cheaper. So for a company intent on growth, that is a great short term.

The concern we have really is what is going to happen next. I think there is a lot of uncertainty about where it goes and what Brexit is going to mean going forward. With 80% of our business outside of the UK, we need to know about the trade deals that will be secured with Europe over the coming months” Explains Mike Ayres. While we await those decisions, Advance Tapes wants to reassure its customers that it is very much business as usual – the result brings no immediate changes or implications to the way in which it trades. Nor does the result alter Advance Tapes’ priority and commitment to its European customers and employees. Advance puts the customers’ interests first, offering the most appropriate product solutions, whatever the customer project, wherever customers are located.

Tape is very versatile and can be used in a variety of applications. Including sports. Yes, you read that right, sports. PVC and cloth tape can be used in sports like football, hockey and even motorsport!

Football

Strapping your socks and cleats, isn’t necessarily a new concept in football, but did you know that tape is used to help the players reduce the risk of injuries during the game and improve their mobility.

So, what kind of tape should you use?  You’ll find some amateur and professional footballers using electrical tape to keep their socks up throughout the match. With its easy tear properties, it’s perfect in this type of situation.

Our AT7 PVC Electrical Insulation Tape, is available in a wide range of colours to ensure that it will match your socks.

Hockey equipment

There are two strategic points on the hockey stick which should be strapped with a tape: the handle and the blade.

Strapping the handle makes the stick easier to use, as it doesn’t rub on the hands or gloves.  Taping the blade is to protect the surface and edges from damage, extending the life of the stick, however it also allows to strike the puck with more precision.

Most players use a rayon cloth tape, just like our AT121 Rayon Cloth Tape, which is very resistant and provides durable protection.

 Indoor Sport Court

Sport floors comply to strict regulations in terms of dimensions defined in the Sport England Guidelines.

Using AT8 Lane Marking Tape provides instant, clean and durable lines, resistant to heavy traffic. It’s very easy to apply in straight or curved lines. This high tack lane marking tape comes in a variety of colours and is ideal to differentiate the areas.

Motorsport

In Motorsport, tape is ideal for health and safety purposes, repairs and to add decorative elements to a racing car.

Our AT175 High Quality Gloss Waterproof Cloth Tape is very popular among racers to make quick repairs and get the car back out on track after an accident. It can easily be cut to length and has waterproof adhesive.

If you have any questions, please feel free to get in touch with our sales team: sales@advancetapes.com or call 0116 251 0191.

We are happy to help you choose the right tape for your application.
